Name: Will Holder
Location: San Diego, CA
How did you get into surf photography? Growing up and living by the ocean my whole life, I’ve naturally been drawn to amazing scenes and landscapes that accompany it. Seeing how big of a part of our lives it is, it’s hard not to get hooked with trying to capture it with your camera.
Tell us about your earliest surfing memories? Earliest surfing memories include walking a half block away to a little spot in Imperial Beach, off Calla Ave. We knew it as "in between the jettys", where the surf wasn’t the best, but that didn’t matter. It was a joy just making it to the "outside", and holding annual bodyboarding contests there with all my best friends on our street.
Do you shoot digital or film? I shoot digital but recently have been experimented with a new 35 mm underwater Nikonos camera which is really fun.
What are some of your future aspirations or goals as a photographer? I’d like to travel more and continue to shoot friends and fellow water people. As long as I can continue to have fun taking photos close to and in the water I’ll consider myself a lucky individual. Sharing with as many people as possible is a goal, hoping they’ll appreciate it.
Tell us about some of your favorite surfers or places to shoot: I’ve mostly just shot friends and surfers who have happened to be in the ocean. I’m lucky to have water-going friends who like to surf/bodysurf. Naturally I have an affinity towards spots in southern San Diego, having grown up here. I absolutely love Central California and in particular Big Sur as well. It’s ridiculously photogenic.
Who are some of your influences? Good people, music, my family, and fun waves.
What is your favorite thing about surfing, and surf photography? The people and scenes that come along with it. Not only is it fun doing it, but also ridiculously beautiful.
Has any of your work been published or showcased in galleries? I was lucky to have some of my photos shown in an event at the House of Blues San Diego recently called RAW ‘Spectrum,’ which was real great. I’ve also shown at the Pannikin Coffee Shop in Leucadia, CA and at Bottlecraft in Little Italy.
Where can people find your prints? People can find prints either on my website http://www.willholderphotography.smugmug.com or my blog at www.williamholder.tumblr.com
Do you have an instagram or website where people can find you? My instagram is @will_holder which I put many of my photos along with random happenings in my life along with my website, www.willholderphotography.smugmug.com and Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/willholderphotography
Anything else you would like to add? Any projects in the making? Look for some fun shots coming out that I just did by the companies, URT clothing, and Be Packs. More things are along the way as well!
Thanks for sharing your photography with us.
Cheers and Thank you!
